현실의 십자가－오이겐 로젠스톡- 휘시의 계시 사회학에 대하여

Eugen Rosenstock-Huessy(1888~1973) is one of the most unknown thinkers in the twentieth century. It would be inappropriate, however, if we continue to disregard the contribution he made to our social improvement no matter how heterogeneous it seems from the perspective of our so-called common sense. Rosenstock-Huessy attempted to establish ‘Offenbarende Soziologie’ as a living discipline on the basis of which one may be able to outdo and overcome what Max Weber and his ilk had achieved in negative ways. By designating ‘Offenbarende Soziologie’ what Rosenstock-Huessy has done I intend to show that his was a conviction that since the present world we live in is itself the very hell everyone fears to come, it is imperative to reframe, or rather revolutionize the way in which we perceive and construct the reality so that we can properly communicate each other at the right moment on all occasions. He believed that it would amount to revelation [Offenbarung]－a notion that challenges the conventional understanding of Revelation of God at its core. Having experienced the catastrophe of the World War Ⅰ as well as witnessed the formidable upsurge of Nietzscheanism at around the same time, Rosenstock-Huessy came to realize that the modern world as a whole is suffering from the penury of orientability. But he thought that Nietzsche is but the other side of the coin which was created with the emergence of the Cartesian way of thinking at the dawn of modernity. In The Decline of the West, the famous book by Oswald Spengler, Rosenstock-Huessy found a bizarre and horrible amalgamation of Cartesianism and Nietzscheanism, against which he felt compelled to fight. So he came to write his own masterpiece, Out of Revolution, after having succeeded in fleeing from the Nazis. Throughout his entire life Rosenstock-Huessy held fast to his own understanding of Christian revelation and thereupon developed the ‘Offenbarende Soziologie’－a unique social theory that pivots around what he called ‘the grammatical thinking.’ And this method, for its part, originated in his conception of ‘The Cross of Reality’ that enabled him to orientate himself and others.
