Conceptualization of emergent constructs in a multilevel approach to understanding individual creativity in organizations

Recently it has been emphasized that a multilevel perspective is necessary for understanding creativity in organizational settings. Although organizations have been considered in the form of “press” or environment with contextual influence over individual creativity, nature of individual creativity has not been fully incorporated into empirical investigations. As the major reason we focused on lack of thorough understanding of the dual properties of individual creativity-relevant constructs (ICRCs): operation in bottom-up and top-down processes in organizations. As the two processes are interwoven, individual creativity should be understood as a part of these dual processes. A critical issue in these dual processes is that ICRCs become the resources that give rise to unit creativity-relevant constructs (UCRCs) through the bottom-up (emergence) processes, and the UCRCs begin to exert influence on ICRCs in turn. To clarify the nature of individual creativity in organizations, we adopted and modified Kozlowski and Klein’s (2000) conceptualization of different types of emergence phenomena. © 2018 Elsevier Inc.
