The Institutionalization of Cinema in Korea: Focus on UNESCO’s Fundamental Education Program and Educational Film

초록

The goal of the paper is to investigate how the introduction of educational film is related to the institutionalization of cinema in Korea. UNESCO planned the fundamental education program for ending poverty in underdeveloped countries through education. The high illiteracy rate and differences of language and culture forced UNESCO consider film as the most effective medium for education. However, the technological complexity of film production seemed to be inappropriate for educational media in backward regions. In response to this problem, audiovisual centers to support fundamental education were established in Korea. The Fundamental Education Centre focused on film programming based on social research. The National Film Production Centre imported specialized film education program through the contract with Syracuse University. It also functioned as media center and distribution agency to produce and circulate educational films. KBS’s office for TV School Broadcasting published film catalogues to manage and distribute educational films produced by itself and collected from domestic and international agencies. The cinematic institutions such as film education, film programming, media center and film library could be formed in Korea for supporting the production and distribution of educational films.
