Whispering-gallery-modelike resonance of luminescence from a single hexagonal ZnO microdisk

We have imaged the luminescence from a single ZnO hexagonal microdisk using a confocal-microscopy-based imaging spectroscopy system. Micro-Raman scattering measurements confirm that the ZnO microdisk was grown with the direction of the c-axis normal to its surface and the Si substrate. The photoluminescence images of the microdisk at room temperature and at low temperature show a donut-shaped intensity profile; the intensity is small near the center and near the edges and is large between the center and the edges. This result is compared with numerical simulations and explained in terms of whispering-gallery-modelike resonances in the microdisk. (C) 2009 American Institute of Physics. [doi:10.1063/1.3255971]
