Effects of Management Practices on Productivity: Evidence from Team Production in Korean Baseball

초록

This paper examines the effects of various management practices on production efficiency using panel data from Korean baseball teams. Of particular interest are the effects of workforce characteristics (worker age, age variation, roster stability, and worker talent disparity) on team production because construction of the team roster (the player-distribution decision) is a major part of team management every offseason. The results indicate that considerably larger efficiency differences are caused by management than by coaching ability. Neither positive nor negative peer effects were found, as disparity in playing talent did not have a statistically significant influence on team efficiency. Furthermore, the negative correlation found between the intrinsic ability of a manager and the age of hitters implies either that efficient managers tend to prefer young workers or that young workers make their managers more efficient. In other words, the results suggest that excellent leadership operates better with a young workforce.
