The Meaning of Changed Cemetery System during Colonial Period - Especially on “The Regulation of Cemetery” and Modern Cemetery

초록

The Japanese Government-General of Korea legislated “the Regulation of Cemetery, Burial and Cremation”(the Regulation of Cemetery) in 1912. This regulation led to change in culture of death in Korea. Modern cemeteries were formed and cremation was legalized by the regulation in colonial period. Also social discourse involving death was changed. First of all, cemetery’s social meaning was rapidly changed. Traditional cemetery was sacred place before colonial period. But modern cemetery became only ominous place. Because there were so many dead strangers in modern cemetery. So cemetery had to be out of living place or to be disguised as the place has nothing to do with death like a park in colonial period. At the same time, government power wanted to control or register even death or dead body. A death that called in public spheres became to be handled as “individual death” not the community member’s death. Dead people and dead body became uncomfortable, dirty thing that should be disposed. This phenomenon stuck out in the big city and it was a major factor of traditional community’s dissolution. So the Japanese Government-General of Korea wanted to diminish Korean’s traditional death rituals and encouraged to cremate to Korean by the same token. Modern Korea society was affected by the change in this period in many ways.
