초록
The purpose of this study is to investigate the difference between the aural and visual comprehension of English loanwords by Korean high school students. 128 high school students in Incheon participated in the study, and every participant took two different tests: (a) an aural recognition test in which the participants were asked to write the meanings of 20 loanwords and 20 non-loan English words and (b) a visual recognition test in which they were asked to write the meanings of the same words presented to them in different orders. The results of these two tests showed that the participants were far less able to recognize the loanwords when the words were aurally presented than when they were visually presented, the average difference being 40.75 points on a 100-point scale. This drastic difference was not observed for non-loan English words as the difference in average was only a little over 13 points, a fact which suggests that the Korean spellings of English loanwords negatively affect students’ listening comprehension of these words. Pedagogical suggestions based on these findings are provided to help students improve their aural comprehension of English loanwords.
