음성 및 음운 연구의 지향과 방법에 대한 성찰
초록
This article considers how speech sounds would have to be studied. It has been recognized since de Saussure that words and morphemes in human language are an arbitrary connection between a signifier and a signified. At the same time, however, it has also been shown especially in the generative grammar tradition that phonetic and phonological behaviors depend not only on phonetic and/or phonological properties but also (partly) on morphosyntactic, i.e., non-phonological, properties. Certain other linguistics fields do phonetic and phonological research solely on phonetic grounds, i.e., physically observable properties. This paper provides numerous cases where physically observable properties alone cannot adequately explain phonetic and phonological patterns and processes and argues that such approaches are not a complete method of linguistics. It is contended that phonetic and phonological studies must be done within the system of language, not on physical objects. Examples are from Korean and English.
