Design of a Mechanism for Automating the Assembly of Multi-Harness Cable Systems

초록

This study presents a novel mechanism design to automate the assembly of harness cables and housings, addressing challenges arising from the high flexibility and degrees of freedom of the components. The proposed system incorporates a Guide structure to align the yaw and pitch freedom of the cable terminals and a Lean and Slide mechanism to refine positional errors during the assembly process. Additionally, an enhanced insertion strategy resolves structural issues, such as bend-down interference, ensuring reliable and repeatable assembly outcomes. The developed system significantly improves productivity and consistency compared to manual operations while overcoming existing design constraints in the terminal-housing assembly process. The findings demonstrate the potential for automation in harness cable assembly, contributing to increased efficiency, reduced costs, and minimized dependency on manual labor in manufacturing environments.
