교재기반 영어글쓰기의 일관성에 관한 수준별 비교분석

The present study examines the quality of coherence in source-based writing by nonnative writers of English in Korea. Writing is considered an important tool that facilitates students’ understanding of source texts and improves their disciplinary thinking skills. Data are collected from timed writing tasks required in an English-mediated course for English majors at a private university in Seoul. Based on 49 essays that addressed the same writing prompt, the analysis focused on tracing inter-sentential relations to identify how textual coherence is established between and among sentences. These essays were classified into two groups, high and low level writing, according to the quality of coherence in their textual organizations. Findings suggest that textual coherence is manifested across paragraph levels in high level writing. In contrast, low level writings show coherence only among adjacent sentences. Teaching and research implications are discussed for those English writing professionals in Korea.
