CMFeel: Hand-Tracking-Based Texture Reproduction Haptic Device Design for Effective VR Design Reviews for Color, Materials, and Finish Designers

Virtual reality (VR) design reviews require realistic tactile feedback to evaluate Color, Material, and Finish (CMF). We present CMFeel, a finger-based haptic device with a rotary texture module enabling seamless switching of real materials during VR hand tracking. A quantitative study (N = 40) assessing tactile-only functionality showed 89.1% accuracy and high confidence (4.47/5). Notably, misclassifications occurred significantly more often within the same material category than across categories (p < 0.001), confirming the device's effectiveness for broad discrimination. A qualitative study with professional CMF designers (N = 3) found they integrate tactile, visual, and auditory cues to assess material harmony in concept-driven workflows. These findings highlight the crucial role of multisensory integration in VR, demonstrating CMFeel's potential for intuitive, expressive material evaluation in professional practice.
