초록

This study investigates how English grammar books published in China explain the English tense and aspect system. While most ELT grammar books recognize 12 tenses, English instruction in China typically includes 16. To explore this discrepancy, we analyzed the eight most popular grammar books written by Chinese authors and found that all four additional tenses fall under the category of "future-in-the-past." These tenses are treated separately due to the absence of a tense system in Chinese that differentiates between will and would. The four future-in-the-past forms of the future-in-the-past should, however, be analyzed in terms of backshifting or non-backshifting; the latter includes would functioning to express futurity or dynamic modality, such as notions of propensity and volition. A survey of 17 English teachers and 34 adult English learners in China revealed that over half of the learners hold a negative attitude toward learning the extra four tenses; only approximately a third of the learners found them helpful. These findings offer valuable pedagogical insights for designing effective English grammar curricula and instructional materials in China.
