Carrier-facilitated transport of L-phenylalanine (L-Phe), one of amino acids, against its concentration gradient from aqueous L-Phe feed solution across an hollow-fiber supported liquid membranes (HFSLM) containing di-2-ethylhexyl phosphoric acid (D(2)EHPA) as the mobile carrier and n-heptane as the membrane solvent was investigated. The effect of various operating parameters such as pH in the feed phase, carrier type and its concentration, circulation flow rate and hydrochloric acid concentration in the strip phase was examined and optimum conditions were found in the permeation experiment. At optimum condition, more than 95% of L-Phe initially presented in the feed phase was stably transported to the strip phase through the HFSLM within two hours without breakage of membrane. The transport rate of glucose through liquid membrane was less than that of L-Phe in the competitive transport of L-Phe and glucose. But the existence of glucose decreased the transport rate of L-Phe.
