Owing to the depletion of energy resources, there is a need to develop sustainable alternative energy sources around the world. A triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) is an innovative technology that can harvest energy wasted in daily life, and various microstructures have recently been introduced to improve performance. In this study, we experimentally analyzed the effects of different microstructure geometries on the performance of a TENG. The output voltage was compared for each structure shape, and the effect was interpreted as the effective contact area. The results showed that the line structure with the best structural stability is an effective microstructure that can significantly improve performance. The microstructure-based TENGs fabricated in this study were verified for practical applications as LED power supplies and switches. Therefore, this study provides a comparative analysis of the correlation between the effective contact area and performance of TENGs, based on the microstructure geometry, suggests an optimal microstructure, and lays an important foundation for the development of energy harvesting technology. © 2025 The Korean Society of Mechanical Engineers.
