Effects of Attribution Information on Third-Party Emotional Responses and Behavioral Intentions in Metaverse Sexual Threat Situations: Exploring the Moderated Mediation of Metaverse Familiarity

초록

This study explored how attribution information—locus of causality, stability, and controllability—regarding sexual threats in the metaverse relates to third-party emotional responses and behavioral intentions, and examined the moderated mediation role of metaverse familiarity. A 2×2×2 between-subjects factorial experiment was conducted with 400 participants aged 19–24. Results indicated that controllability information was significantly associated with blame, anger, and victim empathy, while stability information was related to perceived dangerousness and avoidance behavior. Locus of causality showed limited main effects but played a significant role in interactions with other attribution dimensions. Victim empathy served as a consistent mediator across multiple behavioral intentions. The index of moderated mediation was significant only in the stability–victim empathy–behavioral intention pathway, revealing a selective moderation pattern where higher familiarity strengthened indirect effects. This study provides exploratory evidence on the applicability and boundary conditions of attribution theory in virtual environments.
