접속구성에서의 생략과 방향성 제약

초록

To elide something, the directionality constraint should be obeyed. According to the constraing, the left branch constituent follow the forward ellipsis and the right branch constituent follows the backward ellipsis. The aim of this paper is to clarify the mechanism and motivation of the directionality constraint. The main points can be summarized as followings. First, the directionality constraint operates on the basis of linearity. Second, the operation 'merge' consists of two operations - concatenation and projection/ labeling. Third, the legitimate adjunction structure, that is the left adjunction structure in Korean, is the configuration for the command relation constraint on ellipsis. Fourth, the periphery effect prefers to prepose or postpose something which survives the ellipsis. Lastly, the univeresal word order hypothesis such as universal SVO hypothesis should be reconsidered critically in the viewpoints of theory internal reason and applicability.
