Functionalized sol-gel precursors, which have a fluorescent styrylbenzene derivative and aldehyde groups, were synthesized to develop silica-based, hybrid-fluorescence, chemosensor nanomaterials for the detection of primary amine molecules. The fluorescent hybrid nanomaterial was produced using the prepared functionalized sol-gel precursor and tetraethyl orthosilicate. The resulting fluorescent hybrid nanoparticles with a mean diameter of 150 nm were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and ultraviolet/visible spectroscopy. The capability of these nanomaterials as a chemosensor for primary amine derivatives was investigated using fluorescent nanoparticles and various primary amines. The newly prepared silica-based hybrid fluorescence chemosensor materials recognized only the ethylenediamine molecule with high selectivity through the significant change in emission color from pale green to blue in solution under UV irradiation.
